Cairns - Heavy Tackle Giant Black Marlin
The 150 miles of reef betwen Cairns and Lizard Island is the undisputed home of Giant Black Marlin. More Black Marlin over 1000 Lbs (Granders) are caught here every season than anywhere else in the world. The Heavy Tackle season is September to December with the Lizard Island Tournament normally held in October during the peak of the season. Fishing is normally best in the afternoon with large skip and swim baits up to 15kg (30lb) and are either usually Scad, Scaly Mackerel, Spanish Mackerel, Rainbow Runners or Mac Tuna. The majority of fish are in 200-600 lb class and are male but at least 20% are in the 800 - 1200lb class which are the "Big Girls" . Then there is the odd tackle busting monster that comes in and just cannot be caught...We've seen them and they are out there.
Townsville - Light Tackle Blacks and Stripes
Juvenile black Marlin show off Cape Bowling Green and the surrounding environs and provides excellent light tackle fishing and opportunities to break records or try for marlin on fly.
Gold Coast - Blue, Black and Striped Marlin
There are prime Blue, Black and Striped Marlin Grounds wide of Gold Coast on the continental shelf.
Port Stephens - Striped, Black and Blue Marlin
In February/March Port Stephens is renown as producing a large number of Striped, Black and occasion big Blue Marlin. The bait congregates along the continental shelf making it a magnet for pelagic fish especially Marlin. The famous NSW Interclub Tournament is held here on the last weeked of February and first weekend in March. It is predominantly a live bait fishery, with Slimy Mackeral, Yellowtail and Bonito the bait of choice. Depending on where the bait is holding we'll mark fish and swim the bait at the surface or deep.
